Asbestos
The group of metamorphic minerals that make up asbestos has long been known for its resistance to fire and has been used in wicks, auto brakes, and even Charlemagne's tablecloth. In 1898, an inspector of factories in the United Kingdom reported that the "sharp, glass like nature of [asbestos] particles...have been found to be injurious, as might have been expected." Today, it is known that the inhalation of this otherwise useful substance can cause cancer.

This day in history

Private Slovik Executed for Desertion (1945)
US Army private Eddie Slovik was executed for desertion in 1945. His was the first such execution after the Civil War and the only one of 49 WWII desertion death sentences to be carried out. Slovik deserted with a friend during an artillery attack and later confessed to an MP in writing that he would do it again. Refusing several offers to tear up the confession, he said, "I've made up my mind. I'll take my court martial."
