Prachanda seeks India's support for democratic republic in Nepal

Maoist chairman Prachanda has urged India to extend support in turning Nepal into a republican state.
Addressing a programme organised in New Delhi by the Solitary Committee for Democracy in Nepal on Sunday, Prachanda said India's support in restoring democracy in Nepal has been crucial and called for similar support in establishing democratic republic in Nepal.
The Maoist supremo, who arrived in New Delhi Friday to attend the 'leadership summit' organised by Hindustan Times daily, said his meeting with Indian political leaders was very meaningful and that he was happy with the support expressed by Indian leaders.
Speaking at the same programme, Maoist second-in-command Dr Baburam Bhattarai said Nepal's democracy was still facing threat from King Gyanendra and the Nepal Army. He claimed that the King was hatching conspiracy against the new change in the country and added that the Nepal Army had not yet become democratic.
According to news reports, Prachanda and Bhattarai also joined in a luncheon jointly hosted by former Indian Prime Minister I.K. Gujaral and Bharatiya Janata Party (United) Sharad Yadav in Delhi. They also held interactions with leaders of Nepali communities based in New Delhi.
The Maoist leaders are scheduled to fly back to Kathmandu this evening.
